Bespoke timber joinery · St Helens
Work cut by hand, jointed to last a lifetime.
Gauchwin Joinery is a small workshop making cabinetry, staircases, fitted furniture and architectural woodwork to order. Every piece is drawn, marked out and assembled here in St Helens, using solid timber and traditional jointing.
What we make
-
Fitted & freestanding furniture
Kitchens, alcove units, bookcases, wardrobes and dressers built to the dimensions of the room and the way it is used.
-
Staircases & balustrades
Straight, winder and cut-string stairs in hardwood or painted softwood, with turned or square spindles and shaped handrails.
-
Cabinetry & casework
Doors, drawers and carcasses jointed for daily use — dovetailed drawers, morticed frames and honest, serviceable hardware.
-
Architectural woodwork
Windows, panelled doors, skirtings, architraves and period mouldings matched to an existing property or drawn from new.
Materials & method
We work chiefly in solid timber — oak, ash, walnut and painted-grade tulipwood — chosen board by board and left to settle before it is cut. Sheet materials are used where they belong, veneered and edged so the finished piece behaves the way solid wood does.
From the workshop bench
-
i
Survey & drawing
We measure the space, talk through how the piece will be used, and produce dimensioned drawings so the design is agreed before any timber is cut.
-
ii
Marking out & machining
Boards are selected for grain and colour, machined square, and marked from a single set of rods so every joint lines up when it comes together.
-
iii
Jointing & assembly
Frames are morticed, drawers dovetailed and carcasses glued up on the bench, then dry-fitted and adjusted by hand until the movement is right.
-
iv
Finishing & fitting
Surfaces are sanded through the grits and finished with oil, wax or paint, then delivered and fitted so the piece sits true in its setting.
